From The PFS Board of Directors: 2009-02-02

letter from the board:

First and foremost, we want to welcome our newest Board Member, Marsha Schoeffler! Marsha has been a long time supporter of PFS, the old-time fiddlers, and Moscow in general. Besides being well-known for her fiddling prowess, she's also a wonderfully talented videographer and video producer. We're very fortunate to have her now doing our publicity for us. Welcome Marsha!
For those of you out there who were as disappointed as I was at the cancellation of the Bryan Bowers concert in December because of the snowy, icy weather, you'll be pleased to know that we've rescheduled that show for July 10th. Should be a lovely summer evening concert. Ahhh. the warm sunshine is something to look forward to with pleasure here in the midst of winter.
And while you're writing that concert on your calendar, don't forget to add Dan Maher and Tom Rawson, both in the Attic in April. The 'Events Calendar' across the way has the dates and times for these shows.
For anyone that's interested in learning to call contra dances, the Spokane Folklore Society is going to have a series of classes starting up soon. Check out the notice elsewhere in this newsletter for more details.

board meeting minutes in brief:

Due to conflicting events, PFS is having to reschedule both the June and July dances at the Blaine Schoolhouse from our regular third Saturday to the second Saturday.
The Board has been heartened to see that attendance has been increasing in recent months at both our  dances and concerts. And there have been some wonderful dances and concerts. Great people and great energy.
The Board welcomed Marsha Schoeffler as the new PFS Publicity Coordinator. The Board is still looking for a replacement for Gail Cochran as Dance coordinator, and also a volunteer to help with putting up flyers for PFS events in Downtown Moscow.
Mitchell Frey will be beginning his English Country Dance evenings in the Attic again soon. These will be co-sponsored by PFS. Folks can contact Mitchell for more details

From The PFS Board of Directors: 2008-12-09

As the year is winding down, the winter is looking up. December brings us some very cool events, beginning with the First Thursday concert featuring a first time attic performer, PhilHarmonica. Then, what could be better than a Sunday afternoon concert with the legendary Bryan Bowers. Check out the details about these two events elsewhere in this newsletter.

We’re also treated to two contra dances this month, our regular third Saturday dance, then the ever popular New Years Eve Contra Dance Extravaganza. We’ll kick off New Years Eve with a potluck dinner beginning around 7 o’clock. This is a wonderful opportunity to sit down and visit and share food with your fellow dancers and community members. Then after dinner we’ll whisk away the tables and dance out the years end and welcome in the new. Always one of our favorite dances throughout the year. And I’m sure that we’re still looking for volunteers to help set up tables and chairs etc for the dinner, so feel free to show up a little early and pitch in.

We here at the Board are looking forward to another great year of music and dance. Thank you to everyone for showing up and being a part of the fun. Safe travels to all those who are heading out of town for the holidays.

Peace

Join the PFS Board of Directors! Hey! Wasn’t this notice in the last newsletter?!? It sure looks familiar… Yup, you guessed it… we’re still looking for a couple of people to fill positions that are, or will soon be, vacant on the Board. And that means that there are some things that just aren’t getting done. We’re specifically looking for people to help out with publicity, and with scheduling bands and callers for contra dances. Terri Schmidt and Gail Cochran have been very ably doing these tasks for some time now and are ready to allow others the opportunity to be involved. There’s no prior experience necessary, we’ll show you how to do what needs doing. On average, these jobs take around an hour a month, plus another hour for the monthly Board Meeting where we deal with PFS organizational questions, plan for future events, etc. If either of these positions sound like something that you would like to be doing to help keep PFS events rolling along smoothly, we would love to have you involved. Feel free to talk to any of your current Board Members for more information, or you can send us an email at info@palousefolklore.org. Its fun, its exciting, and you get to hang out with some really cool folks!

Hey, PFS is looking for a few volunteers. Check out the notice on the other side for information about becoming a member of the PFS Board of Directors. We’re also looking for someone to help with putting up dance flyers in downtown Moscow. It only takes 20 or 30 minutes to wander around and do this. And you get to stop in at all your favorite downtown businesses while you're at it. This is one of our main avenues for getting the word out about our contra dances. Let us know if you have a little time to spare, or find yourself downtown often anyways, and would like to help out with this. Thanks!

Howdy All,  Volunteers NEEDED!!

PFS is looking for a few volunteers to help out with keeping things going and getting the word out about our dances and events. The details are below. Thanks!

Have a great day!

First, we're looking for someone to help with putting up dance flyers in downtown Moscow. It only takes 20 or 30 minutes to wander around downtown and do this. And you get to stop in at all your favorite downtown businesses while you're at it. This is one of our main avenues for getting the word out about our contra dances. If you have a little time to spare, or find yourself downtown often anyways, and would like to help out with this, that would be a great help. Feel free to talk to one of the Board Member at the next dance.

The PFS Board of Directors is also looking for couple of people to fill positions that are coming vacant on the Board. We're specifically looking for people to help out with publicity, and with scheduling bands and callers for contra dances. Terri Schmidt and Gail Cochran have been very ably doing these tasks for some time now and are ready to allow others the opportunity to be involved. There's no prior experience necessary, we'll show you how to do what needs doing. On average, these jobs take around an hour a month, plus another hour for the monthly Board Meeting where we deal with PFS organizational questions, plan for future events, etc.

The primary responsibility of the publicity position (Promotions Coordinator) involves sending out information regarding PFS events to local and regional media sources, such as newspapers, radio stations, email lists and web calendars. The majority of this is done via email, so a computer and internet access are essential.

The Dance Coordinator is the person who schedules the Bands and Callers for our Contra dances. Again, this is largely done by email or telephone. The performers for our dances are scheduled roughly six months in advance. We have contact information for all the folks who perform for us regularly. It's a matter of slotting people into our dance dates.

If either of these positions sound like something that you would like to be doing to help keep PFS events rolling along smoothly, we would love to have you involved. Feel free to talk to any of the current Board Members for more information. You can find our phone numbers in a PFS newsletter. Or stop us on the street. Or drop in at our next Board Meeting, Thursday September 11th at Sister's Brew on the corner of Third and Main in downtown Moscow. We'll be there from around 6 to 7 PM. Most likely be in the back room, so stop on by and check it out. Or you can send us an email at info@palousefolklor e.org.

From The PFS Board of Directors: 2007-12-10

The seasons keep rolling along. But what a glorious autumn we had. Warm and sunny, and the colors in the trees!! It was all pretty good this year. But now the days are getting shorter and thoughts lean towards warm fires, hot chocolate, friends and family, and of course, dancing and folk music! PFS has lots in store for us. Be sure to checkout the calendar for details. And be sure to note the return of the ever popular New Years Eve Dance. Come and join friends old and new for a potluck meal before the dance, then dance in the new year.

The PFS Board is experiencing this season of change as well. Please join us in warmly thanking Patricia Jessup for her wonderful work as our Publicity Coordinator. We particularly appreciate the work and success that Gail has achieved in arranging for our recent dance bands and callers. Great job Gail! More top notch dances and concerts are on the way.  Please also thank Dale Le Dancin, of A Computer Guru!!, for resurrecting & maintaining the PFS website.  Thanks Roger for letting him move & edit all the material Roger created for PFS!!

This also means that we now have two vacancies on the Board, and two opportunities for PFS members to be involved with the organization and planning for the group. Its fun. Its exciting. It could be you. Feel free to contact any of your Board members for more details.

The Board wishes you all pleasant holidays, safe travels if you find yourselves a-traveling, and we'll see you at the dances and concerts!

Peace

In Brief;

From The PFS President, Dan Maher: 2007-08-08

This is my first message to all of you, and what I want to say is --Wow!!  The Glen Castrinos concert at The Attic and the last contra dance, these were both wonderful events.  Everyone had a great time!  I think for now, the PFS will continue as it has during the past two years emphasizing more member involvement, and possible taking a look at our role in the Palouse Community.  I am really exited about this prospect.  I am looking forward to working with the board, an upbeat group of both veterans and a couple of new folks,    Please renew your memberships, and know that we are going to be asking for more participation from all of you to pull events together.  Don't worry--it won't be drudgery, just good old-fashioned fun.  That's why we're here.

Dan Maher

2007-08-08

  • There are good concerts and dances coming up.  The Glen Castrinos Concert was a great success with about 40 people attending.  The Attic was full!

  • Geri Sayler has kindly taken over the volunteer job of newsletter layout.

  • We are looking for a web page master. (Found!)

  • We discussed how to attract more members.

  • We are looking for  ways to further our involvement in the community

  • These questions are under discussion 'Where do we want to be in the community?'  and 'What does  the community want?'

  • We defined the board's role as guiding the PFS, looking for more participation from members.

Volunteerism

A Call For Help

As your new volunteer coordinator, I would like to extend appreciation to all of you who are already helping the PFS.  The board itself is an all volunteer group.  Other volunteers put up posters, set up sound, design the newsletter, host out of town musicians and callers, bring refreshments to the dances and concerts, and help in many other ways.  We are always looking for more helpers to prevent burn out.  If you can help in any way, talk to a board member.     Thanks!  --Annie Hubble

Prepaid Dance Cards

Welcome to the newest benefit for PFS members... pre-paid dance cards. Have you ever wanted to come to a dance and leave your clunky purse or wallet at home? Ever forget your wallet or purse? Now you can pay for either a half a year, or a full year of dances at one time, and save money while doing so. Just present your card and get it punched when you arrive, or better yet, you can even leave the card in our files and it will be there when you arrive, light and buoyant and ready to dance. Pre-paid dance cards $30 for a half year (7 dances), or $60 for a full year (14 dances).
